Every January the Pantone Color of the Year is announced, and for 2014 you will see Radiant Orchid cropping up everywhere. The Color of a Year is a great way to bring an update to your home (or your wardrobe).
Pantone describes their choice this way: Radiant Orchid blooms with confidence and magical warmth that intrigues the eye and sparks the imagination. It is an expressive, creative and embracing purple—one that draws you in with its beguiling charm. A captivating harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid emanates great joy, love and health.
No matter how you describe it, Radiant Orchid is, well, purple. It won’t be for everyone. You can “go big or go home” and paint an entire room Radiant Orchid, or you can enjoy this trend by using small pops of the color in your decor. In other words? Accessorize.
Accessories are a great way to try out a new color without committing to a huge change in your over all color scheme.
If you already have a neutral white color palette to work from, incorporating pops of Radiant Orchid into your home is easy!
You already have blank canvas, so add in as much or as little as you like. An area rug, throw pillows, even a lamp or two… this is a fun and inexpensive way to add in the Pantone Color of the Year.
But what if you don’t have a nice white canvas to start with? Pairing this beautiful purple with other colors is easier than you may think. You can pair the vibrant color with natural elements like wood, plants, stone, or other natural textures like seagrass or jute.
The rustic elements help to bring out the more earthy tones in purple and make it seem less feminine and a bit more grounded.
There are also complimentary colors that you can pair purple with. Pantone recommends hunter green, olive, teal, and turquoise, and you can easily pair it with gray. It works well with metallics also, and purple and gold is a classic combination. (Although that combo isn’t for everyone.)
Even if you aren’t ready to embrace Radiant Orchid, you can still easily bring some into your home with a real orchid or two.
My favorite place to pick up orchids is at Trader Joe’s. They always have a great selection of healthy, reasonably priced orchids to choose from.
