The new year brings new beginnings, both for homeowners and for their homes. Freshen up your home in 2018 by embracing new trends and trying something new and different.
Here are some of the modern decor trends I am crushing on and think that you will too.
Bold Colors
The all white kitchen and the neutral gray bedroom are getting a makeover, and decorators are embracing bold colors. People have become tired of the sometimes visually boring neutral palettes that make homes look alike, and are bringing back color in bold ways like the room in this Encino home.

For some, bold colors are going directly on their walls. One of Valspar’s picks for color of the year is Radiant Golden Ochre. They explain that bold colors are trending because “We are embracing the authentic—the natural over the synthetic—with food and fashion leading the way away from artificial ingredients and dyes.” For those who do not want to over-commit to this trend, statement furniture, rugs, and throw pillows are a great way to embrace bold colors without making too many drastic changes.
Mixed Finishes
“I see a continued affection for mixing metal finishes in all areas, from furniture, kitchen and bathroom fixtures to lighting, cabinet hardware and accessories. Copper, bronze, brass, satin brass, gold and black nickel now all work together and are interchangeable” — Juliet Gold, Juliet Gold Design

Mixed metals have been trending for some time, but now we are seeing the addition of more dark finishes. Black nickel is being used more and it mixes well with a variety of brighter, shinier finishes. The best way to mix metals is to pick one dominant metal to use and then sprinkle in other metals as accents.
Geometric Prints

Geometric prints made an appearance in 2017, but it was mainly on cushions and small items. This year, geometric prints are prominently featured on tile, wallpaper, and even on statement ceilings! West One Bathrooms has several bold geometric designs to choose from, like this Poly Hedric Wall & Deco Wet System. The specially designed decorative membrane is watertight and can be used directly on the walls in bathrooms, showers, and kitchens.
Dark Woods
As mentioned earlier, the days of all white room design are fading quickly. People are looking to add more warmth to their home design, and many are opting to use dark wood to bring a cozy feeling to their spaces. Dark wood flooring is making a comeback. Painted kitchen cabinets are being replaced by wood cabinets with a dark chocolate stain.
Statement Front Doors

Homeowners are increasingly using their front door to make a statement. Front doors will get a makeover with bold color in 2018. According to door company Truedor, shades of violet will be the most popular, followed by various hues of blue.
